Hong Kong has about seven (Pat Sin and Cloudy are the same almost) approved flying sites suitable for paragliding activities under the appropriate weather conditions. Flying at these sites is co-ordinated with other air users and is subject to the restrictions detailed in this site guide. Every week the HKPA advises other air users of our planned activities.

Temporary closure of flying sites

Circumstances may arise under which other air users need access to sites where we fly. This could be planned training, construction work or emergencies. temporary closures will be announced by posting a message on our windtalker Shek-O site CINDY (tel: 2809 4190).

Flying at other sites

To accommodate special events, charity fund raising or competitions - flying at other sites can be arranged subject to approval by the Safety Officer of the HKPA . The approval is subject to a strict procedure including agreement of a flight plan, take-off and landing sites with other air users and landowners.

Communications

For your own safety and our freedom to fly in Hong Kong stick to the following:

  • Carry a working radio at all times - tuned to 145.9875 unless advised.
  • Mobile phones are extremely useful in an emergency, but illegal to use in the air.

Before you fly

Make sure someone knows your intended flight plans and your expected return time. It is always advisable to fly with someone. Leave the HKPA contact telephone list in a place someone can find it.

  • Always check the windspeed - if in doubt - DON'T FLY.
  • Remember your pre-flight checks.
  • An emergency life preserver and hook knife are recommended when flying coastal sites.
  • Wind speed can be obtained from the Royal Observatory.   The windspeed and directions are expressed in meters per second and degrees.  The most useful windstations are located at Waglan and Cheung Chau.   To obtain a live report, call 2926-8473 and ask for the windspeed and wind direction at either Waglan or Cheung Chau.  There are other windstations, but they not so accurate.

Environmental

It's a good idea to fly with a proper compass or GPS in the spring and summer as you may inadvertently enter a cloud and become disoriented.   This has happened to a few people.

Avoid hacking away at the undergrowth and ripping out roots when rearranging the launch site. Take your rubbish with you, and be careful with cigarette butts. Hong Kong has enough environmental problems without us adding to them.
